Vintage Wooden Sailboat for Sale

Offered for sale is a one–of–a–kind, beautifully designed and hand–built wooden racing Lark scow sailboat.

It is 18' long, 28' mast height, boom length 10.5', beam 5.5'.

This vintage racing scow has been stored in a dry and covered garage in the Santa Monica Mountains with an intact set of Dacron sails.

I've never taken it out on the water, but it is a beautiful thing to behold with an interesting history.

I moved to this area (lake in the mountains above Malibu) about 20 years ago. As I was moving in, another family was cleaning out their father's home. He was an industrial designer for Mercedes in Germany prior to the war. Hilter and the Nazi party co-opted Mercedes-Benz and so our neighbor fled to Canada. After the war, collegiate sailing spread across the US and parts of Canada and he became enamored with all things fast on the water. He came to Southern California and taught industrial design and continued his love for fast boats. He was a master craftsman —  I now have his lark scow and the design details are amazing.

The racing Lark Scow never gained in popularity here at the lake, and so it remained in storage. Our lake ultimately ended up having its own class of sailing boat — the Malibu Class, and the races have been exclusive to that particular class, which kept other boats from gaining in popularity. It is time for this boat to move on to another loving home, and for the space in my garage to be opened up for other adventures (okay, my wife is making me clean out my stuff).

The condition of the boat deck, mast and boom are as you see them in the photos, all original. The deck needs a good buffing, the vast majority still feels like glass as you run your hand over it. The upper two to three feet of the mast has some sun damaged varnish — the wood is clean and nice. The planks are straight and solid. I can take more detailed photos if you want to see specific areas.

This boat has a trailer and you'll have to arrange for transport.
